I've had a lot of depressions since I was 14 years old, and right now I'm depressed again (27 years old).

I went on constultations when I was 15, followed with some stays at a mental hospital.
They tried a lot of different medication but like you told in a more recent post, they wear off.

But after 12 years of almost nonstop treatment I'm not even close to the finishing line. I've been heavily bullied as a child and young adult. I've been abused when I was 13-14.
So I have a lot of thraumatic experiences.
I've been absent from work since june 2011.
Right now I'm waiting for a phone call to know when I'll be able to return to a mental hopsital.

It's really hard for me to survive real life. People just don't understand what a depression is. They tell me I should make a click, get a girlfriend, stop thinking about the past,...
it's easily said.

I can't forgive/forget/ignore/... what has happened to me in my youth. If I could it would be cool, but I'm a realist. There's too much anger still residing in me about what happened.

Hope to read more,

Bert
Gent, Belgiumbertdplhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00128204586167789778noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733092798153036082.post-85830516208944363772012-01-24T10:31:07.046-08:002012-01-24T10:31:07.046-08:00Thanks mate. :) As I said, it was your talk that f...Thanks mate. :) As I said, it was your talk that finally pushed me from "I really ought to write about depression" to actually doing it, and I'm very grateful for that.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09391771543846437234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733092798153036082.post-79632093034951578802012-01-24T10:08:57.110-08:002012-01-24T10:08:57.110-08:00*hug*

(Which was part of why it took me many years to identify my problem as depression - it was way easier to assume it was just teenage angst and normal hormone fluctuations.)

Pharmaceuticals were a necessary part of my treatment, too. Extreme cardio and a good diet probably helped, but there's no question that I needed prescription to get "over the hump" to a place where willpower was actually effective - or where I actually had any relevant willpower.Isaachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09792271411229877237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733092798153036082.post-79701559336673410102012-01-18T21:46:53.727-08:002012-01-18T21:46:53.727-08:00AE, I think depression could definitely contribute...AE, I think depression could definitely contribute to loss of taste. There was a study a couple of years ago that found people with untreated depression did not register color as brightly as healthy people (not self-reported, they were measuring retinal response). That said, it could also be a whole bunch of other things - gum disease is apparently a common cause, along with various neurological stuff (and yes, hormones or stress) - so I would highly recommend that she at least call her doctor if it doesn't resolve soon.

(Oh, and also, she might want to confirm that she doesn't have a loss of smell too. The two interact a lot, and her doctor will need to know if there's problems with both.)Teleutehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10568349771569189166noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733092798153036082.post-40699964784078237552012-01-18T14:05:29.304-08:002012-01-18T14:05:29.304-08:00Well, there are diabetics who can control their di...Well, there are diabetics who can control their diabetes by avoiding sugar, and diabetics who need to take insulin. Was this a..."... let me taste food ..."

Was this a pretty way of making a general point about being able to do normal things, or does your depression actually interfere with your ability to taste? I have another friend who currently has no leads on her sudden inability to taste. My lack of a medical degree says it could be stress or hormones or both -- and an anecdotal link between depression and taste would be interesting for me to share with her.

And yes, depression is hard to explain and admit to. But you know me, I tend to share too much information about my health publicly. If your body produced too much or not enough of something in any other organ, you would get medical assistance for that. But in the most complex and sensitive organ in your body? Just will it away. Before, I'd seen the antidepressants as a stopgap to keep me going until I used talking therapy methods to solve the underlying problems.

And that's not how it's going to be. You can work on a problem like "I'm painfully shy around stenographers;" you can't work on a problem like "I'm exercising and eating right and sleeping 8 hours and I'm still SO TIRED ALL THE TIME" by identifying the negative thoughts and finding ways to answer them. So, there will be meds forever.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09391771543846437234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4733092798153036082.post-1674244171773235632012-01-16T15:00:07.068-08:002012-01-16T15:00:07.068-08:00I have also suffered from depression for about 2 y...I have also suffered from depression for about 2 years now. It won't let you cheat in the "make-up-words" sort of way, but there is plenty of testing letter combinations to see if they make something going on. But it is a fun way to stay connected.

As for playing the board game, my last memory of it was playing with a #1 style player that was a stickler for the rules, but somehow snuck the word Texans in there for some major triple-word pointage. It wasn't till our friends had gone home that it dawned on me. In this case its a very literate person cheating, because the rest of us were too overwhelmed trying to get those 2 and 3 letter words. I also took heat for playing a two letter word that no one knew. As it turns out, Words-with-friends allows it. Go figure.statichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13844233434312629715noreply@blogger.com
